This portrait was done using 2 separate black & white passport photos of the subjects provided by the client. The difficult part of this piece was the imagination of the skin colour tone.
Portraits done from passport photographs are usually look stern without smile but no choice as the subjects may be deceased I guess.

This portrait was done using 2 different photos provided by the client who is the son of the couple.
These were the best photos he could find but there is a gap in the couple's age where the husband looks younger than his wife. He got no choice but to proceed with whatever he got in order to remember his deceased parents as a couple in a painting simply because his parents didn't have any photo taken together during their old age. At least my talent has given that guy something that money can't buy... the memory of his late parents.

The owner of this dog did this portrait so that he could display it proudly in his living hall. As a memory too when it's no longer with him. To date, most of the pet portraits I did were dogs. I guess people like to keep dogs as pet more compared to other animals. They are also willing to spend for their pets' need. As you can see in this picture the way the owner dress it up, it's not surprising that he would spend on a hand painted portrait for the sake of owning it.

The lady client requested the portrait to be done from 2 separate photos. I didn't know the reason why she wanted it in such. I supposed these photos are their favorite ones which she wanted it to be merged into one drawn portrait for memory sake in an artistic manner...

Soft pastel is a difficult medium to handle but if it's being used the way I preferred, the result can be as realistic as photographs. I would say the technique is quite tedious. After spending 20 over years working with this medium, I've somewhat developed a habit of blending the colours for hours in order to get what I wanted. It needs lots of patience to do so otherwise you would end up frustrated & most probably give up...

This piece of art work was done on a Canson paper with interesting texture which most artists like to draw on.Unfortunately,the client didn't know how to appreciate & rejected it,too bad.It wasted all my effort as well as time spent to give him my best.In order to make him happy,I drew another one on the reverse side of a new Canson paper which was smooth in comparison & the result was equally good.Extention of time was granted,of course.This was the first time a client was unhappy with the paper texture I used but not the quality of my work.Most importantly,he was happy at last,phew...

This portrait was done 9 years ago not long after I opened my shop in Far East Plaza.The interesting part is that it was drawn from a black & white photo given to me by the client into a coloured portrait.That was what she wanted.After studying the photo,I used a black paper to bring out the subject using the overlapping technique. The result was stunning.

My 1st. & 2nd. Soft-pastel portraits.

This was my very 1st. coloured portrait of Ronald Reagan when I started to explore on soft-pastel medium way back in 1987 as a hobby.Ronald was still alive then if I'm not wrong.It was done on an A2 size paper.Of course I'd been doing pencil & charcoal portraits before that.For your info.,I became a full professional portrait artist only a decade ago.The technique of using this medium is totally different form those 2 types as my fingers are my tools.Using them to blend the colours was another experience.Too much of rubbing would result in my loss of finger prints & my identity would be gone...(laugh).





















This was my 2nd piece. The portrait of Robert Redford was done immediately after that. It was in A3 size.Both art works are framed up & being kept in my home town Ipoh till now. Maybe they will fetch a high price at the auction table in future,who knows...!-)

This portrait was done in 2001.To date, I have done quite a number of such portraits.From black & white photograph to coloured portrait is not an easy job.I have to imagine the colours in order to match the time or era of the photograph taken.For instance, the colour of the clothings should have the feel of the 60s.Green colour was used for the background simply because Malay people like it.
